I'd started saving them at the suggestion of my future wife, who has still never attempted a quilt, but wants to someday. Although I was and would still be quite willing to wait (a lifetime if necessary), the shirt collection was instead snatched up by my Mom, who made quilts for each of her three children over the past year.
And so I'd like to present The Superhero Quilt, by Ginny Douglas:
We start our tour in the upper left-hand corner...
That's Brian Bolland's modern take on the Flash, Jim Steranko's Nick Fury, John Byrne's "Captain America Runs for President" campaign button, and a picture of the Thing by Jack Kirby.
Moving on to the right, we have Alan Davis' Captain Britain, Dave Cockrum's Uncanny X-Men, a square featuring tons of Jack Kirby drawings (we'll come back to it) and a Steve Ditko Kraven the Hunter.
Moving across and down now to the lower left-hand corner, we've got every Avenger ever by Art Adams, a Jack Kirby Silver Surfer, Steve Rude doing "Bring on the Bad Guys," and Todd McFarlane's Grey Hulk busting through his own logo.
...And in the bottom, right-hand corner, we've got a Jack Kirby "Cap Battles the Assassins!" Captain America, John Romita's Spider-Man standing over a defeated Green Goblin, and then Green Lantern and Kryptonite logos.
Now, back to those middle four squares for a closer look...
Note the quilt is stitched in vertical strips, with vertical and horizontal elements, but the middle four squares are stitched in an pattern exploding out from the center. Very dynamic! These four squares all feature Jack Kirby drawings: The Thing, a whole bunch of guys (Triton, Mister Fantastic, Captain America, the Silver Surfer, the Falcon, Spider-Man (maybe not drawn by Kirby), the Hulk, Karnak, Thor, the Thing, Black Bolt, Gorgon, the Black Panther, the Human Torch, Wyatt Wingfoot, and a John Byrne drawing of Wolverine), the Silver Surfer, and Captain America.
Hmm, bad shot of the Surfer panel. Here...
Best quilt ever, Mom. Maybe best object ever. Thank you.
